One of the things I’ve been praying for recently is to grow and be stretched in the area of finances. One of my main life goals is to reach a point where I’m giving away more money than I’m keeping for myself. I’m a long, long way from that goal, but that’s what makes it a lifetime goal! It’s a goal that’s always in the back of my mind as I’m planning my budget every month. It’s one of the main reasons I am so focused on getting out of debt.
Something God has been challenging me about lately is thinking outside my very small existing circles. This is coming in several different contexts: friendships, prayer life and now finances. It’s easy to buy lunch for friends, support missionaries that also happen to be friends, and things like that. When I read this post by Anne Jackson, God challenged me to expand that circle a little bit more and sponsor a child through Compassion.
My first thought was that I needed to take time to make sure it fits in my budget. After all, it’s a $32/month committment, and I’ve never been one to make a committment and back out of it. Whenever I make a decision, I want to count the cost (literally or metaphorically) up front and be 100% certain before I commit to anything. But when I thought a little harder, it occured to me that I probably spend at least that much a month without bothering to consult my budget: a couple DVD’s, new sweater, new shoes, etc. So I just went to the website and did it. Congrats! Go Faith!
Awesome Jen! Keep us posted about her
We to have a third child as I call him. His name is La-kue-too and he is 5. Compassion International is an awesome place to give. We have recieved so many letters and updates from our ” son” and I know that we are making a difference in someones life. He is from Thailand ( which is great because Thai is our favorite food) he has been our son for two years now. $32 a month is such a commitment but in the long run you know that you are making a difference in the life of a child and their family. I am so proud of you! You are going to be such an excellent friend and mentor to her. Way to go!
YAY!!!!!
Congratulations on your new addition! Seriously, I think it’s awesome that you’re doing this!
Thanks for telling the world about Eva. Thank you for using your on-line voice to speak about Compassion too.
If you ever need anything from Compassion, please let me know. I’m here to serve you anyway I can.

Congrats! She looks just like you! – In a bolivian kind of way……
Just kidding. Isn’t that what we say when a child is added to the family?!?!? So proud of your decision. Enjoy her!
Wow, awesome! We have a Compassion child too, his name is Jabesh Kumar. He lives in India.
We adopted a little boy last year, and it has been the best thing we’ve ever done. He is so much like Caleb…..and Caleb was the one who picked him out. So cute. His mom writes us letters, and it is such a highlight. It is amazing that you can potentially change a child’s life with $32/month.
Way to go, Jen!!!!
That’s great Jen! Dave and I have a sponsored “son” in Rwanda. His name is Oliver. I carry his picture around in my wallet and pray for him every now and then. It’s so awesome to be able to impact someone miles and miles away that has such basic needs that we can and get to meet! This is the kinda stuff that keeps the church healthy! Go Jen!
